Common questions
Will my mobile network work in Nepal, or do I need a local SIM card?
Indian SIM cards generally do not work in Nepal unless international roaming is actively enabled. For seamless internet and calling, it is very easy to purchase a local tourist SIM card (such as Ncell or Nepal Telecom) at the Sonauli border or upon reaching your destination by submitting a passport copy and a passport-size photo.
Are digital payments and UPI widely accepted in Nepal?
While digital wallets and UPI (like PhonePe or Google Pay) are accepted at some select tourist shops or major hotels in cities like Kathmandu and Pokhara, connectivity can be unreliable. It is strongly advised to carry enough physical cash (Indian Rupees up to ₹100 notes or Nepalese Rupees) for daily expenses, shopping, and roadside stops.
What clothing and gear should I pack for a Nepal trip?
Packing depends on the season, but layers are essential. If you are traveling between October and March, carry heavy woolens, jackets, thermals, and comfortable walking shoes. For warmer months, light cotton clothing along with a light jacket for evenings is ideal.
Is tipping customary for drivers and guides in Nepal?
Yes, tipping is a standard way to show appreciation for good service in Nepal. While entirely voluntary, tipping your driver and local guide at the end of the trip for their safe driving and assistance is customary and greatly appreciated.
